British BLACKCURRANTS

Fruit as an ingredient has become more and more widespread over the last 20 years and so has the diversity of the country of origins being used to supply this fruit. Supply is a truly global affair today with goods being shipped from as far east as China and Chile in the west, all contributing to the global environmental issues.

Looking at these issues, Treelinks and AJ & CI Snell are working on options to develop UK Fruits for use in the food manufacturing sector, starting with blackcurrants.

It may be small, and it has been around for the last 400-500 years, but the mighty blackcurrant is still bursting with more health promoting antioxidants than most other fruit and vegetables, including blueberries and is still the original 'superfruit'!

It's the special antioxidants called anthocyanins, that give blackcurrants their distinctive dark colour and British blackcurrants are grown and bred especially for their deep colour, which makes them extra good for you.

Treelinks, in conjunction with AJ & CI Snell, will be marketing FROZEN BRITISH BLACKCURRANTS from the 2009 season which will be available in September. The fruits are grown, managed, harvested, frozen and processed by Anthony Snell in Herefordshire and will be sold and distributed by Treelinks (Ingredients) Ltd through their UK distribution system. The product will be IQF (individually quick frozen) and can be ordered in any quantities from one box (12kgs) upwards.

It has become a passion of both companies to resurrect commercially available British fruits for use in the food manufacturing sector and Blackcurrants is an ideal fruit to start this process. With the move to the more lucrative fresh market in the UK the commercial frozen fruit infrastructure has disappeared and with this the market turned to supplies from Eastern Europe as they were the cheap alternative.

Today, with the volatile exchange rates, economic downturn, food scares and global warming, locally grown English fruits can now offer a cost effective alternative.

The benefits are:

  • Cost effective production
  • Significantly reduced food miles
  • Product provenance (Field to Fork)
  • Variety specific: Ben Hope, Ben Gairn , Ben Tirren , Baldwin
  • Supports local agriculture
